You're about to pay for a book-summary app, and you'd rather not find out in month three that you picked the wrong one. We compared Headway and Blinkist using each company's pricing pages, help center, App Store and Google Play listings, and recent public reviews, all checked on October 11, 2026. We did not hands-on test either app.
Inkly, our own app, is here too, as a third option for people who'd rather have lessons and quizzes than a summary library.

Headway vs Blinkist: which one should you pick?
Pick by how you'll use it, because both apps sell the same thing: nonfiction books cut down to about 15 minutes of text or audio. They split on library size, habit features and price.
- Pick Blinkist if you mostly listen. Both apps narrate every title, but Blinkist has 9,000+ of them, and its Shortcasts turn podcast episodes into 15-minute listens. Its pricing page also lists CarPlay, handy for the commute.
- Pick Headway if you need a daily nudge. Headway builds a plan from a short goal quiz and keeps your streak alive as long as you get through 3 key points a day. Your highlights come back as spaced-repetition flashcards. And it's $10 a year cheaper at list price.
- Pick Inkly if you'd rather be quizzed than read summaries. There's no library and no audio, just a short lesson, a quiz on it and a chat that helps you put it to use. It's iPhone only.
- Pick neither if you finish the books you start. You're the reader these apps are built to imitate. Try the free daily title on each before you pay for a shortcut you may not need.
Each app also gets its own full write-up: our Headway app review and our Blinkist review.
Blinkist vs Headway: what's actually different?
Blinkist has the bigger library and more content formats. Headway's library is smaller, but it has more habit tools. The table sticks to how each company describes its own app.
| Feature | Headway | Blinkist |

| Library (company's own figure) | 1,700+ titles (App Store, homepage) or 2,500+ (FAQ) | 9,000+ titles in 27 categories |
| Formats | Text and audio for every summary | Text and audio for every title |
| Length | About 15 minutes; audio runs 15 to 20 minutes | 15-minute reads or listens |

Headway's details come from its FAQ and App Store listing. Blinkist's come from its plans overview, pricing page and App Store listing.
How much do Headway and Blinkist cost?
As of October 2026, Headway costs about $12.99 a month or $89.99 a year. Blinkist Premium costs $99.99 a year ($79.99 for the first year on its website), or $12.99 to $15.99 a month in the App Store. Blinkist Pro adds the Blinkist AI assistant and costs $139.99 for the first year, then $174.99 a year.
| US prices, October 11, 2026 | Headway | Blinkist | Inkly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free version | 1 pre-selected summary a day | 1 hand-picked title a day | Learning-type analysis and plan preview |
| Free trial | 7 days with the yearly plan, once per store account | 7 days with the yearly plan "in some cases" | None listed |
| Monthly | $12.99 | $12.99 to $15.99 (App Store) | $9.99 to $14.99 (App Store) |
| Yearly | $89.99 | $99.99, or $79.99 for year one on blinkist.com | $19.99 to $49.99 (App Store) |
| Higher tier | None listed | Pro: $139.99 first year, then $174.99 a year | None |
Where these numbers come from:
- Blinkist: yearly prices are on its pricing page, which applied the first-year discount automatically when we loaded it. That page has no monthly plan, so the monthly figure comes from the App Store listing, where 1-month Premium shows up at both $12.99 and $15.99.
- Headway: its FAQ says the price changes with region, currency, promotions and whether you buy on the website or in an app store. Its own comparison post puts it at about $12.99 a month and $89.99 a year, and both prices show up in its App Store purchase list.
- All three apps show several price points in Apple's list (Blinkist has 1-year products at $79.99, $99.99 and $119.99). Only the checkout screen tells you which one you'll pay.
Read the renewal line on Headway's web plans
Headway's website sells 4-, 12- and 24-week plans where the first period costs half the renewal price, according to its pricing page:
- 4 weeks: $19.99, then $39.98 every 4 weeks.
- 12 weeks: $39.99, then $79.98 every 12 weeks.
- 24 weeks: $59.99, then $119.98 every 24 weeks.
Do the math on that last one: a single 24-week renewal ($119.98) costs more than a full year at $89.99. If you plan to stick around for a year, the yearly plan in the app is cheaper.
Which is cheaper, Headway or Blinkist?
Headway is cheaper at list price: $89.99 a year against Blinkist's $99.99, a $10 gap. Blinkist's $79.99 first-year web price flips that, but only for year one. Month to month, Headway's $12.99 matches Blinkist's lowest App Store monthly price and undercuts its $15.99 one.
Can you use Headway and Blinkist for free?
Yes, both give you one free title a day. Headway's Free Daily Read doesn't ask for card details, according to its FAQ. Blinkist's free Basic plan gets you the "Blink of the Day" in the app or at blinkist.com/daily, as its help center explains.
Both also offer a 7-day free trial tied to a yearly plan. Headway's works once per app store account; Blinkist's trial page says it's offered "in some cases" and only once. Either way, the trial rolls into a paid year unless you cancel before day 7. Set a phone reminder for day 5.
Which has the bigger library, Blinkist or Headway?
Blinkist, by a lot. It says it has 9,000+ titles across 27 categories, with podcasts included. Headway's own pages can't agree on a number: its App Store listing and homepage say 1,700+ summaries, while its FAQ says 2,500+. Even the bigger number is under a third of Blinkist's.
Headway says it adds three to five titles a week. Both apps also bolt other formats onto the summaries.
Blinkist extras
- Shortcasts: 15-minute versions of podcast episodes, made with the original creators and narrated by the hosts.
- Guides: expert-led deep dives that mix original audio, Blinks, Shortcasts, exercises and quizzes.
- Shorts: five one-minute ideas a day (micro-quizzes, quotes, videos), refreshed every 24 hours.
- Spaces: private or shared title collections for a book club or a partner. Free Basic members in a Space can read titles that paying members recommend.
- Blinkist AI (Pro only): summarizes articles, PDFs, videos and podcasts you give it.
- Platinum: a tier above Pro with live sessions (typically 3 to 4 a month) and a set of infographics. The pricing page doesn't list its price.
Headway extras
- Shorts: a separate feed of quizzes, interesting facts, visuals and shortcuts.
- Spaced repetition: turns the insights you save into flashcards that come back over time.
- Self-growth challenges: themed tracks such as Self-Confidence, Wealth and Emotional Intelligence.
- 7-day guided plans: for example "Speak like a CEO" and "Stop delaying, start doing".
- Recaps: the main ideas and actions at the end of each summary.
The bigger library pays off when your reading jumps between history, science and business. If your list is mostly popular self-improvement titles, look up the next five in both catalogs before you pay.
How does the daily experience differ?
Headway runs on a streak and a plan. Blinkist runs on picking what to read next. Which one keeps you coming back depends on how much pushing you need.
A day on Headway, going by its FAQ: you start with a short quiz about your goals, and your answers shape what the app recommends. To keep your streak, you read or listen to at least 3 key points, a low bar on a busy day. Between summaries, the Shorts feed serves quizzes and quick facts, and the highlights you save come back later as flashcards.
A day on Blinkist, going by its help center: the app hands you a Blink of the Day and five one-minute Shorts, and recommends titles based on your interests. When one book isn't enough, a Guide covers a whole topic. Premium adds offline listening, sending Blinks to your Kindle, and a free second account for one other person.
Our take: if you've quit reading apps before because nothing pulled you back, Headway's streak and flashcards are the reason to pick it. If you already read most days, Blinkist gives you more to work with. And summaries are easy to forget on either app, so spend five minutes on our guide to how to remember what you read.
Which platforms do Headway and Blinkist run on?
Both run on iPhone, Android and the web, and both sync your progress across devices when you use the same account.
| Platform | Headway | Blinkist | Inkly |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Android | Yes | Yes | No |
| Web | Yes | Yes | No |
| Also | Mac app (macOS 11 or later) | CarPlay | Nothing else |
One catch: Blinkist Spaces works only in the mobile app, not on the website.
How are Headway and Blinkist rated?
Both rate well. As of October 11, 2026, Blinkist has 4.8 stars on the US App Store and Headway has 4.6. On Google Play, it's Blinkist 4.6 and Headway 4.5.
| Store (US), October 11, 2026 | Headway | Blinkist | Inkly |
|---|---|---|---|
| App Store | 4.6 from 117,171 ratings | 4.8 from 156,756 ratings | 4.6 from 17 ratings |
| Google Play | 4.5 from 176,003 ratings | 4.6 from 177,388 ratings | Not on Android |
| Google Play downloads | 10M+ | 10M+ | Not on Android |
Averages hide the angry tail. In each store's own breakdown, 1-star ratings make up 4.7% of Headway's App Store ratings and 1.2% of Blinkist's. On Google Play it's 6.6% against 3.7%.
We also read the 100 most recent US App Store reviews for each app. For both, most of the 1- and 2-star reviews were about money rather than the content. People wrote about trials that turned into a yearly charge, renewals they say they didn't see coming, and subscriptions bought on the company's website that don't show up in Apple's settings. Complaints about the content were rarer, and mostly said the summaries felt shallow or got details wrong.
So one rule covers both apps: cancel where you paid. For App Store and Google Play subscriptions, that's your store settings. For Headway subscriptions bought on its website, it's your Headway account page, per its subscription terms. Deleting the app cancels nothing.
Where does Inkly fit next to Headway and Blinkist?
Inkly fits if you'd rather get short lessons with a quiz after each one than work through a library of summaries. It's an iPhone app that works like Duolingo for personal growth. Inkly is our app, so weigh our take accordingly. Everything below comes from its App Store listing and this website, the same kind of sources we used for Headway and Blinkist.
What Inkly does:
- Finds how you learn and gives you a learning type, such as "Vision Weaver".
- Builds an adaptive AI learning plan from your goals and habits.
- Serves daily insights: short lessons that turn big ideas from nonfiction books, such as Thinking, Fast and Slow, into clear takeaways.
- Quizzes you after each insight and lets you chat with Inkly to reflect and turn an idea into an action.
- Tracks streaks, progress and a growth map across six areas: Vision, Clarity, Willpower, Vitality, Wealth and Influence.

What Inkly doesn't do: there's no audio, no summary library, no Android or web app, and no free trial listed. The learning-type analysis and plan preview are free. Daily insights, quizzes, AI reflection and progress tracking need Inkly Unlimited, which the App Store lists at $9.99 to $14.99 a month or $19.99 to $49.99 a year. Its 4.6 rating comes from just 17 App Store ratings, a small sample next to the six-figure counts above.
Want something to listen to on your commute? Inkly is the wrong app. But if you've finished plenty of summaries and can't recall one from last month, that's what the quiz-and-reflect loop is for. Our list of the best self-improvement apps puts it next to more options.
What are other apps like Headway and Blinkist?
If neither app fits, try one of these Blinkist alternatives (they double as Headway alternatives). Each changes one thing about the format.
- Shortform: book guides that pair a book's key ideas with analysis comparing them to other books, plus interactive exercises. Pick it if 15-minute summaries feel too thin.
- Imprint: visual lessons on psychology, philosophy, history and more, with chapters of two minutes or less and daily quizzes.
- Deepstash: illustrated idea cards pulled from popular books, pitched at 5 minutes a day. Our Deepstash review has the full rundown.
- Nibble: interactive 10-minute lessons and quizzes across 37 topics. It's made by Headway Inc, the same company behind Headway.
FAQ
Is Headway better than Blinkist?
Neither wins for everyone. Blinkist has the bigger library (9,000+ titles against Headway's 1,700+ to 2,500+) plus podcast Shortcasts, which suits listeners and wide readers. Headway costs less per year ($89.99 vs $99.99 as of October 2026) and leans on streaks, flashcards and challenges. Pick it if you need a daily nudge.
Which is cheaper, Headway or Blinkist?
Headway is cheaper at list price: $89.99 a year and about $12.99 a month, against Blinkist Premium at $99.99 a year and $12.99 to $15.99 a month in the App Store (October 2026). Blinkist's website offered $79.99 for the first year when we checked, which beats Headway for year one only. Watch Headway's web plans, though: they renew at double their first-period price.
Can I use Headway and Blinkist for free?
Yes. Headway's Free Daily Read gives you one pre-selected summary a day, and Blinkist's free Basic plan does the same with one hand-picked title. Both also offer a 7-day free trial with a yearly plan (Blinkist says "in some cases"), which becomes a paid year unless you cancel before it ends.
Is there a Duolingo for self-improvement?
Several apps borrow Duolingo's streaks and short daily sessions. Headway adds streaks, quizzes and flashcards to book summaries, and Nibble and Imprint teach in short lessons with quizzes. Inkly, our app, is built around that idea: short daily lessons, a quiz after each one and a growth map, on iPhone only.
What's the best Blinkist alternative?
Headway is the closest match: the same 15-minute text and audio summaries, a smaller library, a lower yearly price and more habit features. For more depth per book, Shortform adds analysis that compares each book with others. Rather have visuals or quizzes than summaries? Look at Imprint or Inkly.
What is the best book summary app?
Between the two big names, Blinkist is the best book summary app for listening and library size, and Headway is the best for building a daily habit at a lower price. Try each one's free daily title for a week before you pay for either.
