How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is the number of words divided by your reading speed. A 300-page book at 275 words per page is about 82,500 words. At 238 words per minute, the average adult speed for non-fiction, that's roughly 5 hours and 47 minutes.
Words per page vary with the font, page size and layout, so treat the page count as an estimate. If you know the word count, enter it directly. Your own speed from the reading speed test gives a more personal answer than the average.
Small daily sessions add up. Twenty minutes a day at an average pace is about 1.7 million words a year, or about 21 books of 300 pages. For audiobooks, the calculator uses ACX's figure of about 9,300 narrated words an hour, roughly 155 words per minute.
