This Headway app review is for you if you've seen the ads (maybe even taken the quiz) and want to know what you're buying before a trial turns into a charge. We did not hands-on test Headway. What follows comes from Headway's own pricing page, FAQ and subscription terms, its App Store and Google Play listings, and recent public reviews. We checked all of it on October 11, 2026.

One naming note: this is Headway the book-summary app from makeheadway.com, not Headway (headway.co), the company that matches people with therapists. Headway's FAQ says the two are unrelated.

Headway app review: our verdict by use case

Headway is a solid summary library with good audio and a lot of upselling. Whether it's worth your money depends less on the app than on how you'd use it.

If you... Our take
Commute, walk or do chores and want ideas in your ears Worth trying. Every summary has an audio version.
Want to know which books deserve a full read Good fit. Fifteen minutes tells you if a 300-page book is for you.
Already finish books and want depth Skip it. A 15-minute summary is the trailer, not the movie.
Want to remember and apply ideas Mixed. Spaced repetition and quizzes exist, but only in Premium.
Are on a tight budget Use the free daily summary first. Pay only if you open it most days.
Tend to forget trial end dates Be careful. Billing is the top complaint in recent 1-star reviews.

Our advice if you do subscribe: buy the yearly plan through the app store you already use, then put the renewal date in your calendar that same day.

What is Headway app and how does it work?

Headway is a micro-learning app that turns nonfiction bestsellers into summaries you can read or listen to in about 15 minutes. Its FAQ says it's published by GTHW App Limited and owned by Headway Inc, the company that also makes the Impulse and Nibble apps.

Going by Headway's FAQ and pricing page, the loop looks like this:

  1. You take a short quiz about your goals, on the website or in the app.
  2. Headway builds a learning plan from your answers. Its pricing page shows 7-day plans such as "Speak like a CEO" and "Stop delaying, start doing".
  3. You read or listen to summaries, each built from a handful of key points. Get through at least 3 key points a day and your streak stays alive.
  4. Between summaries, a Shorts tab serves up quizzes, quick facts, visuals and shortcuts.
  5. You highlight ideas as you go, and Spaced Repetition brings them back as flashcards.

How big is the library? Depends which Headway page you ask. The App Store listing and homepage say 1,700+ summaries, Google Play says 2,000+ titles, and the FAQ says 2,500+. Whatever the true count, Headway says it adds 3 to 5 new titles most weeks.

How much does Headway cost?

As of October 2026, Headway Premium costs $89.99 a year in the US App Store after a one-week free trial, while Headway's website sells 4-, 12- and 24-week plans starting at $19.99 for the first 4 weeks. So your Headway app cost depends a lot on where you buy.

Where you buy (US) Plan First period Then renews at
App Store Headway Premium, yearly Free for 1 week $89.99 a year
Website 4-week plan $19.99 $39.98 every 4 weeks
Website 12-week plan $39.99 $79.98 every 12 weeks
Website 24-week plan $59.99 $119.98 every 24 weeks
Google Play Not listed by name Not listed In-app items from $0.99 to $399.99

Sources: Headway's pricing page, the App Store listing and the Google Play listing, checked October 11, 2026.

The App Store also lists other "Headway premium" purchases at $12.99, $19.99, $29.99, $39.99, $49.99 and $59.99, with no hint of what period each one covers. There's also a separate "50 Infographics + Workbook" add-on for $19.99. Headway's FAQ says prices vary by region, currency, promotion and whether you pay on the web or through Apple or Google. To see your options in the app, open any summary and tap "View other plans" on the offer screen.

Read the second number. Every web plan renews at double its first-period price. The per-day figures Headway shows ($0.71, $0.48 and $0.36) use the intro price; at renewal they become about $1.43, $0.95 and $0.71 a day. Do the math and even the 24-week plan costs about $260 a year after the first period. That's nearly three times the App Store's $89.99 yearly price.

Comparison table of Headway Free and Premium: Free gets one pre-selected summary a day with reading and listening; Premium adds unlimited summaries, learning plans, spaced repetition, Shorts and quizzes for $89.99 a year on the US App Store

Is Headway app free?

Headway is free to download, and its free plan, Free Daily Read, lets you read and listen to one summary a day without entering a card. The catch: you don't pick the book. Headway does. Premium adds unlimited summaries, guided learning plans, audiocasts, spaced repetition, audio highlights, Shorts and quizzes. Several recent App Store reviewers also say the free version keeps nudging them to upgrade.

Does Headway have a free trial?

Yes, on the yearly plan. Headway's FAQ says that plan comes with a 7-day free trial, usable once per app store account, and the App Store listing shows "Free for 1 week, then $89.99/year." Don't assume every trial looks like that, though. Headway's subscription terms say a trial may also be offered at a reduced price instead of free, and some reviewers describe shorter trial offers. Read the trial length on the payment screen before you confirm.

How does the Headway subscription renew?

Every Headway subscription renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. The App Store listing says to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Headway's FAQ adds a warning: cancel very close to the renewal moment and one final charge may still go through.

The subscription terms (last updated September 2, 2026) add one more wrinkle: Headway may sell "commitment plans" paid in installments over a minimum period, and cancelling one early can leave the remaining payments due, as disclosed at purchase. And no, deleting the app does not cancel anything.

What do you get with Headway Premium?

Headway Premium gets you the full summary library in text and audio, plus the tools meant to make ideas stick. According to Headway's own pages, that means:

  • Text and audio for every summary. Audio runs about 15 to 20 minutes, plays at 0.5x to 2x speed and can be downloaded for offline listening.
  • Learning plans. Built from your quiz answers, these line up summaries in order around a goal.
  • Spaced Repetition. Turns highlights, and even unfamiliar words, into flashcards you review later.
  • Challenges. The App Store lists challenges on topics like Wealth, Self-Confidence and Emotional Intelligence; Google Play adds roleplays.
  • Shorts and quizzes. A scrolling feed of quizzes, facts and visuals.
  • Streaks, widgets and recaps. Each summary ends with a recap of the main ideas.
  • Audiocasts. Longer, podcast-style summaries.
  • Languages and devices. Summaries in 11 languages, on iPhone, iPad, Mac with Apple silicon, Android and the web, with progress synced across them.

What you don't get is the book. Headway's content team writes the summaries, per its FAQ, and each overview page links to Amazon if you want the full thing. If you do end up reading the whole book, our guide on how to remember what you read covers how to keep more of it.

Headway app reviews: what do users say?

Headway's store ratings are high: 4.6 on the App Store and 4.5 on Google Play. Trustpilot is less kind, at 3.9.

Platform Rating Number of ratings Checked
App Store (US) 4.6 out of 5 about 117,000 Oct 11, 2026
Google Play (US) 4.5 out of 5 about 176,000 Oct 11, 2026
Trustpilot 3.9 TrustScore 6,652 reviews Oct 11, 2026

The written reviews pile up at the two extremes. We read the 250 most recent written App Store reviews in the US (July 8 to October 10, 2026): 184 gave 5 stars and 53 gave 1 star. On Trustpilot, 60% of reviews are 5-star and 22% are 1-star.

What happy reviewers mention most:

  • Short summaries that fit a coffee break or a commute.
  • Listening while cooking, driving or at the gym.
  • Refreshing books they read years ago.
  • Goal-based paths that tell them what to read next.

What unhappy reviewers mention most:

  • Billing, by a wide margin. Charges after a trial, renewals they didn't expect, add-ons they didn't mean to buy, and website subscriptions that don't appear in Apple's subscription list.
  • Narration. A handful say the audio voice sounds flat or synthetic.
  • App behavior. Autoplay jumping to a random next summary, and upgrade prompts on the free plan.

Even Headway's own FAQ acknowledges that billing complaints come up in reviews. That doesn't make the app a scam, but it's a good reason to give the trial and renewal terms two minutes of your attention before you pay.

Headway pros and cons

Headway is a good library you can listen to anywhere, with pricing that rewards people who read the fine print.

Pros

  • Every summary in text and audio, with offline downloads and speed control.
  • A free daily summary with no card needed.
  • Learning plans and streaks give you structure if you tend to drift.
  • Spaced repetition flashcards for the ideas you highlight.
  • The US App Store yearly price ($89.99) is far below the web renewal rates.

Cons

  • Web plans renew at double the intro price.
  • Billing is the most common complaint in recent 1-star reviews.
  • Smaller library than Blinkist, which lists 9,000+ books and podcasts.
  • The free plan gives you a pre-selected book, not your pick.
  • 15 minutes is thin for dense books.

Is Headway worth it?

Headway is worth it if you'll open it most days and mostly listen. At $89.99 a year, that's about 25 cents a day, or about 45 cents a session if you use it 200 days a year. If you open it twice a month, it's an expensive way to feel productive.

Headway is a good fit if you:

  • Have dead time (commute, chores, workouts) you'd like to fill with nonfiction.
  • Want to sample books before committing to a full read.
  • Are rebuilding a reading habit and like streaks.

Skip Headway if you:

  • Already finish books. You'll get more from the book itself.
  • Want analysis and context. Shortform's longer guides suit you better.
  • Know you forget to cancel trials. Use the free plan instead.

What are the best Headway alternatives?

The closest Headway alternative is Blinkist. The others swap the 15-minute summary for something else: longer guides, visuals, shorter bites or practice. Ratings below come from each app's US App Store listing, checked October 11, 2026.

  • Blinkist: the biggest library (9,000+ books and podcasts, per its listing), rated 4.8 from about 157,000 ratings. See our Headway vs Blinkist comparison and our full Blinkist review.
  • Shortform: longer guides that compare a book's ideas with other books, plus exercises, rated 4.6 from about 1,400 ratings. Best if 15 minutes feels shallow.
  • Imprint: visual lessons and daily quizzes on psychology, philosophy, finance and more, rated 4.8 from about 57,000 ratings.
  • Deepstash: five-minute bites of ideas from books, rated 4.7 from about 78,000 ratings. Our Deepstash review has the details.
  • Inkly: if you want quizzes and a learning plan instead of summaries. Inkly is our app, so weigh our take accordingly. It turns ideas from nonfiction books into short daily insights with a quiz after each one, and builds a learning plan around your goals. It's iPhone only, free to download, rated 4.6 from 17 ratings, and needs an Inkly Unlimited subscription for the daily insights.

FAQ

Is Headway app legit?

Yes. Headway is a real app, published by GTHW App Limited and owned by Headway Inc, with an Editors' Choice badge on its App Store page and about 117,000 App Store ratings averaging 4.6. Its weak spot is billing: many recent 1-star reviews describe unexpected charges after trials or renewals. Check the renewal terms before you confirm a purchase.

Is Headway free?

Headway is free to download, and its Free Daily Read plan gives you one pre-selected summary a day to read or listen to, with no card needed. Unlimited summaries, learning plans, spaced repetition, Shorts and quizzes require Headway Premium.

How much is Headway per month?

Headway's website doesn't sell calendar-month plans. The shortest is a 4-week plan at $19.99 for the first 4 weeks, then $39.98 every 4 weeks, as of October 2026. The US App Store yearly plan costs $89.99, which works out to about $7.50 a month.

Does Headway have a free trial?

Yes. Headway offers a 7-day free trial with the yearly plan, and you can use it once per app store account. It converts to a paid subscription automatically, so cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you don't want to pay.

Is Headway better than Blinkist?

Neither is better across the board. Blinkist has the bigger library (9,000+ books and podcasts on its App Store listing vs Headway's 1,700+ to 2,500+ summaries) and a slightly higher App Store rating (4.8 vs 4.6). Headway's pitch is its habit features: challenges, Shorts and goal-based learning plans. Our Headway vs Blinkist comparison puts the two side by side.

How do I cancel Headway?

Cancel where you paid. On iPhone, go to Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, Headway and Cancel. On Android, use the Play Store's Payments & subscriptions menu. If you signed up on the website, log in to your Headway account page and click Cancel Subscription, or email support@get-headway.com.

Does deleting the Headway app cancel my subscription?

No. Deleting the app leaves your subscription running, and you'll keep being charged until you cancel through Apple, Google or your Headway web account. Headway's FAQ and App Store listing both say this.
